Understanding Fonts in SquareKicker

SquareKicker uses the Google Fonts library to give you access to over 1500 typefaces for your Squarespace website. This guide explains how fonts work in SquareKicker, the key differences between SquareKicker and Squarespace fonts, and what options are available for customization.

How SquareKicker Fonts Work

SquareKicker provides access to the Google Fonts library, with 1500 font choices to customize your Squarespace site. These fonts can be applied to any text block, including individual words, body copy, and headings as well as the text in forms, buttons, and so on.

You can use the tools to adjust size, color, weight, line height and spacing, position, and outline. You can add additional customizations to the text block itself, including background, border, position, shadow, and other effects.

All fonts available in SquareKicker are sourced directly from Google Fonts, which you can browse (and search) here, or in the Extension. This font library ensures consistent performance and reliable loading across all devices and browsers.

Note that the font customization tools in the Extension can be applied to your native Squarespace fonts as well as your SquareKicker fonts.

Key Differences Between SquareKicker and Squarespace Fonts

SquareKicker Fonts:

  • All fonts are from the Google Fonts library
  • No licensing concerns as Google Fonts are open source
  • Applied through the SquareKicker Extension
  • No Adobe fonts
  • Targets the specific element you're customizing and does not make changes to your site-wide settings

Squarespace Fonts:

  • Access to approximately 1600 fonts total
  • Mix of 600 Google Fonts and 1000 Adobe Fonts
  • Some Adobe fonts may be subject to licensing changes
  • Applied through Squarespace's native font selector
  • Applied as Site Styles to quickly customize fonts across your site

Occasionally Squarespace may retire fonts due to licensing changes. These will be Adobe fonts. In this instance, you will receive a notification in your Squarespace account asking you to update the retiring font. If you don't update it, it will be replaced for you. Because SquareKicker exclusively uses Google Fonts, your font choices won't be affected by Adobe font licensing changes or retirements that may impact Squarespace's font library.

You can read more about retired Squarespace fonts here (November 2025).

Note that, as retired Squarespace fonts are Adobe fonts, they won't be available in the SquareKicker Extension either.

Custom Fonts

Custom font uploads are not currently available in SquareKicker. You can upload custom fonts to Squarespace. You don't need custom code to do this, as Squarespace has a custom font uploader.

To upload a custom font:

  1. Open Site Styles, then click > next to Fonts.
  2. Click a font format, like Headings, Paragraph, or Buttons.
  3. Click the font dropdown menu, then click the upload icon.
  4. Click and drag your font file into the upload area, or click + and select the file to upload.

Fonts in your SquareKicker Templates

The fonts in your SquareKicker Template are completely customizable. There are no custom fonts included in these templates, and nor are fonts added with CSS, so you can easily change any of the fonts used on the template to suit the brand you're working with.

To do this, you can adjust your Squarespace Site Styles and choose a Squarespace font, upload a custom font to Squarespace, or customize individual elements with SquareKicker (or all three!). Because the fonts used in templates are added with Squarespace Site Styles, its very straightforward to apply your desired font right across the website, with just a few clicks.
