Are you using a combination of Squarespace plugins, extensions, and/or custom code? This article might be helpful for you.
We heard from a few SquareKicker customers that when they're using multiple Squarespace plugins, they occasionally encounter issues with their designs. For this reason, we created a handy visual tool in the SquareKicker extension so you can easily keep an eye on your code injection area. The Squarespace Storage tool visually displays the amount of space each extension or plugin is taking up in your code injection area, and other custom code if that is present.
SquareKicker alone is unlikely to fill up the code injection area and cause issues in this way, but if you're using a combination of plugins, you might encounter issues. SquareKicker can't help with other third-party plugins, or custom code, that you've added to your Squarespace website, but we hope this tool will give you a useful indication of how the code injection area is being used.
Please reach out to customer support if you have any questions about this - we'd love to help where we can!
What is the code injection area?
The code injection area is where SquareKicker is installed on your Squarespace website (you would have done this when you originally installed SquareKicker). The space is also used for any other third-party plugins or extensions, and/or custom code that you have added in. The code injection area does have a capacity limit, which SquareKicker alone is unlikely to fill, no matter how many designs or customizations you make.
Do I have to worry about this?
Probably not! If SquareKicker is the only extension (or plugin) that you use, then you don't have anything to worry about. Carry on! If you're using SquareKicker in combination with other plugins and custom code, and you've encountered issues saving your designs, you might want to pop into your SquareKicker settings (see below) to check your Squarespace Storage.
If my code injection area is full, or nearly full, what should I do?
- Jump into your website on Squarespace, and open SquareKicker on the top-level menu (you don't need to be in edit mode).
- Click Settings.
- Look for the Squarespace Storage tool toward the bottom of the Settings panel.
- Have a look at what is taking up space in your code injection area - use the key to determine which plugins are using space.
- Where possible, remove plugins or other custom code. If you're experiencing issues removing custom code from the code injection area, we recommend using Squarespace safe mode to do this.
- If there is an extension or plugin using a disproportionate amount of space, reach out to the provider and seek support.
Does content on my site, like photos, add to the code injection area?
No, it doesn't. Please continue to add imagery and content to your site as you like. This won't affect your code injection area.
Does SquareKicker have a limit of how many custom designs I can create?
SquareKicker does not set a limit on how many designs you can make. This is the same across all pricing plans (for clarity, the pricing plans reflect how many different websites you can edit). It’s very unlikely that your custom designs created with SquareKicker will fill up the code injection area. We do recommend that if you are making multiple pages with the same designs, that you use the SquareKicker Preset tool to reduce the amount of custom code being duplicated, saving space in the code injection area (it's a much faster workflow too!). Learn more about Presets here.
Will this affect custom designs on my live site or designs that I am working on?
This shouldn't affect existing designs on your site, but if your storage is full, it may prevent you from making or saving further changes or customizations, until the issue is resolved.
How much space does SquareKicker take up?
The amount of space SquareKicker takes up is in relation to the amount of customizations you have made with the extension. We actively work to create efficient code that takes up minimal space in your Squarespace website. SquareKicker has the ability to store your customizations with even more efficiency once you're on a paid Squarespace plan. In the history of SquareKicker, we have yet to encounter a website that has filled up the code injection area with SquareKicker customizations alone. So keep calm, and carry on designing! As an example, the SquareKicker website uses 26% of the code injection area - and we use plenty of SK customizations across our site (no surprises there!).
We do recommend that if you are making multiple pages with many of the same designs, that you use the SquareKicker Preset tool to reduce the amount of custom code being duplicated, saving space in the code injection area (it's a much faster workflow too!). Learn more about Presets here.
If I upgrade my SquareKicker or Squarespace plan, will I have more storage space?
Unfortunately not. The code injection area limit is set by Squarespace and is the same for all Squarespace plans, and so is unaffected by SquareKicker pricing plans. However, as we said above, we can store code more efficiently on paid Squarespace plans.
